The department offers students small classes, ensuring interaction with faculty members. Early clinical experiences and intensive course work in the areas of concentration are important features of the program. The program provides a field experience in tutoring at-risk learners early in the program. In the senior year, teacher candidates participate in a twice-a-week practicum their first semester and a full time internship in their second semester. The Special Education program is continuously reviewed and updated to meet the needs of the changing profession.
Special Educational majors have the opportunity during the sophomore year to complete a semester abroad. Please work with your advisor well in advance to ensure you are meeting the program of study for your degree area.
Winthrop University faculty and students are active in the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). The CEC, a non-profit professional association, supports special education
professionals and others working on behalf of individuals with exceptionalities by
advocating for appropriate governmental policies, setting professional standards,
providing continuing professional development, advocating for newly and historically
underserved individuals with exceptionalities, and helping professionals achieve the
conditions and resources necessary for effective professional practice. Find out
