Center for Civic Learning

About the Center

The Center for Civic Learning was founded in 2017 by Provost Debra C. Boyd. The purpose of the Center is to:

  • Coordinate civic engagement initiatives between the divisions of Student Life and Academic Affairs
  • Expand civic engagement opportunities across campus
  • Develop appropriate academic and co-curricular programs
  • Promote engagement in the democratic process through candidate events and forums, voting, informed citizenship, volunteerism, and more

The Center is a result of the work of the University’s Task Force on Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement.

Dr. Karen M. Kedrowski serves as the Executive Director of the Center for Civic Learning. She holds an MA and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Oklahoma and a BA in Political Science, French, and History from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. Dr. Kedrowski has held many posts in her tenure at Winthrop University, including as Director of the Global Learning Initiative, Chair of the Department of Political Science, and Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.
