What do you think of when you think of Geography? Maps? That is the most common answer. Sure maps are important in Geography, but they are just one small aspect of what makes up the discipline. Geography is a broad topic that covers human and physical patterns on the earth along with their interaction and impacts. Geography also consists of geospatial technologies which are the tools that allow us to better map, monitor, and model our changing world.
Geography is often called the "mother of all sciences." It has been around in some form or another since the earliest humans wondered what was on the other side of a hill and began to explore, describe, and measure their surroundings.
In today's interconnected world, Geography helps us to better understand global patters and impacts. Whether those patterns relate to economics, politics, environmental issues, or cultures, Geography not only tries to quantify and describe the patterns but more importantly understand WHY these patterns exist.
