Chemistry, Physics, Geology and the Environment

Study Abroad

The nature of today's economy requires that a responsible member of society appreciate the inherent globalization of businesses on all levels. As such, students of any discipline should embrace this trend and actively seek opportunities to learn about other cultures. Winthrop's Study Abroad program is an excellent way to prepare for work and citizenship in a diverse society and an increasingly globalized world. The Department of Chemistry, Physics, Geology and the Environment supports student participation in a semester long study abroad program during their undergraduate careers. Historically, approximately 10% of Winthrop chemistry majors have completed an academic term or summer abroad. Study abroad is particularly important preparation for students interested in seeking professional opportunities in one of the many international chemical industries.

Due to the demands of the degree tracks, chemistry majors need to complete the following courses with grades of C or above prior to considering a semester abroad:

  • Organic Chemistry I & II
  • Calculus I & II
  • Physics I & II
  • Biochemistry I
  • Physical Chemistry I

For students planning to graduate in four years and interested in medical or dental school, the department does not recommend a term abroad. A full four years at Winthrop are required to complete the academic curriculum, sufficiently prepare and take the national MCAT/DAT examination and obtain the necessary clinical experience to be competitive for health professional schools.

Each study abroad destination offers a unique set of courses to choose from. Based on chemistry degree criteria, only General Education courses should be pursued during the term abroad. Courses that fall into the following categories are the most general and easiest to find at the various international universities:

  • Global Perspective
  • Historical Perspective
  • Social Science
  • Humanities
  • Foreign Language

Recommended Plans of Study:

The ACS B.S. degree program (for any of the ACS certified programs) — MAT and MAT5 students should follow this degree track.

The B.S. degree program.
