WHEREAS, Mr. Ed Driggers served with distinction on the Winthrop Board of Trustees for eight years following his appointment by the South Carolina General Assembly to the Congressional District 4 seat in 2018; and
WHEREAS, in that time, he served as a knowledgeable chair of a number of past and current committees, including, most recently, serving as a member of the Executive Committee in his role as chair of the Strategic Planning and Facilities Committee; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Driggers has been an exemplary example of an alumnus committed to a life of public service, including more than 20 years as the City Administrator for Greer, and more than four years as the City Administrator for Chester; and
WHEREAS, upon his retirement from municipal government in 2019, his name was placed on the Edward R. Driggers Center for the Arts, the City of Greer’s central destination for visual and performing arts, reflecting the esteem and appreciation his former community holds for him, even to this day; and
WHEREAS, at Winthrop Mr. Driggers brought his deep knowledge in planning and development to the Board of Trustees and was credited with contributing to the initial and sustained success of the Winthrop: United in Excellence strategic planning process as well as the Campus Master Plan; and
WHEREAS, the knowledge, skills and abilities gained from Mr. Driggers’ experiences as a public servant in the field of municipal government have consistently made positive impacts on Winthrop students’ lives; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Driggers always served with an affable demeanor and was appreciated by his fellow Trustees for his expertise, candor and ready sense of humor; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Driggers has long been supported in his professional endeavors by his wife, Christy Bigham Driggers '82, '88, whom the university credits with him receiving a Master of Business Administration degree from Winthrop to complement his undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Trustees, the President, and the Winthrop University faculty, staff and students do hereby convey their deep respect and profound gratitude to Mr. Ed Driggers, and do commend him for outstanding and meritorious service to the Board of Trustees of Winthrop University.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary to the Board of Trustees shall certify that
the Winthrop University Board of Trustees approved this resolution on the 30th day
of April
2026, in a regularly scheduled meeting. Such resolution shall be maintained and publicly
posted
by the Secretary of the Board in a time and manner as required by law.
