Winthrop Staff and Student Take Leadership Role in SCIRSA

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - Cameron Edwards, Winthrop University's assistant director of sports programs, was recently elected as state director of South Carolina Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (SCIRSA).

He will serve as the S.C. representative for a two-year term on the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (the NIRSA) Region II Leadership Team, which is made up of representatives and student leaders from the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

Another charge for Edwards is to recreate the SCIRSA Palmetto Cup for flag football and SCIRSA Palmetto Classic basketball tournaments. These events pair students with professionals in a competitive sports atmosphere and give them insight into the role that collegiate recreation plays on the college campus.

Edwards also will work with the S.C. state student leader, Colin Wrba of Cooperstown, New York, who is a Winthrop graduate student for intramural and club sports. Wrba has a business degree from State University of New York at Oswego.

The two will organize and implement the annual state workshop, a state-wide professional development opportunity for collegiate recreation professionals and interested students. They'll also communicate state-wide news and give regional updates.

Edwards, a native of Easley, South Carolina, joined Winthrop in 2016. He previously worked at the University of South Carolina Upstate and Stetson University, and holds a master's degree in higher education administration from Louisiana State University and an undergraduate degree in recreation and a minor in business from Clemson University.
