Winthrop Social Work Alumni and Students Take on Leadership Roles

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University social work alumni, staff and students were recently elected to most of the vacant board positions on the state chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW).

The membership organization consists of professional social workers who enhance the growth and development of its members. It helps shape legislation that affects the health, welfare and education of state residents, in addition to providing experts in such areas as addictions, aging, child welfare and domestic issues.

Professor Anthony Hill, chair of the Department of Social Work, is proud to see the dedication and engagement of the university community in helping shape the social work field. He is involved on the national level, having been elected this summer as the Region V Director to the association’s national board, representing North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Here are others involved:

President Elect – Ashley Garrick ’11, who is the associate field director with the Department of Social Work. She holds a bachelor’s degree in social work and psychology, and she is an M.B.A. student.  

Vice President – Jimmie Williamson, ’80, ’85, ’21, who holds a bachelor’s degree in visual arts, a Master of Education in guidance and counseling, and a Master of Social Work. He previously served on the university’s Board of Trustees.

Member at Large – Jennifer Butler ’95, who holds a bachelor’s degree in social work.

B.S.W. Student Representative – Ja’Shanti Davis, a current Winthrop undergraduate student.

M.S.W. Student Representative – Jerry Wickerson, a current Winthrop graduate student.

Catawba Unit Representative –  Marzieh Joy Yousefian ’20, who is the department’s practicum support specialist and is a Master of Social Work alumna.
