Winthrop Esports Coach Josh Sides said so far, Rock the Hill is the second largest Super Smash Bros. event in state history. While this is the first event the team and club have hosted, he hopes it’s the first of many.

“We recognize the importance of engaging with our community, and events like this let us showcase why esports at Winthrop is so special,” he said. “It will be a unique experience for the competitors getting the opportunity to compete in the Winthrop Coliseum. We also hope we can put on a good show for those who come to watch as well!”

Since its launch in 2019, Winthrop’s esports team has captured two national titles: the 2021 League of Legends College Championship and the Collegiate Esports National Championship’s 2021 Rocket League Championship. The team was also a finalist for the Esports Awards’ Collegiate Program of the Year.
