Winthrop Employee, Two-Time Alumna Passes Away

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – A two-time Winthrop University alumna and employee has passed away. 

Jennifer “J.L.” McDaniel-Milliken ’92, ’96, passed away on Nov. 18 after a valiant battle with cancer. 

McDaniel-Milliken began her Winthrop career in 2001. She worked as the university’s music librarian and taught voice methods. She directed the university production of “Red, White, and New: American One-Act Operas” and co-directed “Dido and Aeneas.” 

She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in vocal performance from Winthrop and a Master of Science degree in library and information sciences from the University of South Carolina. 

Outside of her university contributions, McDaniel-Milliken performed the title roles in opera productions of “Suor Angelica” and “Dido and Aeneas.” She had been the soprano soloist in performances of Handel's “Messiah,” Vivaldi's “Gloria,” Saint-Saens' “Christmas Oratorio,” Britten's “A Ceremony of Carols,” Schubert's “Mass in G,” Faure's “Requiem” and many other sacred works. 

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 23, at 2 p.m. at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church.
