ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Even in the midst of a quarantine, Winthrop University is ready to employ the ultimate social distancing measures to welcome the Class of 2024 at Virtual Winthrop Day on Saturday, April 25.

Winthrop Day is usually an annual on-campus event dedicated to celebrating admitted students and inviting them, their families and loved ones to campus for a glimpse into the Winthrop Eagle life. This year, because of the campus’ closure due to COVID-19, the Office of Admissions has transformed the day into an exciting virtual experience. (Admitted students, register here: https://www.winthrop.edu/admissions/winthropday.aspx.)

“Winthrop has always prided itself on the one-on-one interaction with students,” said Eduardo Prieto, vice president for access and enrollment management. “While unprecedented circumstances prevent us from celebrating Winthrop Day as we typically have, our Virtual Winthrop Day will give admitted students and their families a new and interactive way to explore different aspects of the university at their own pace. They will be warmly welcomed to the nest.”

The day will begin at 10 a.m. with a live welcome from the Winthrop community and will feature videos and information from faculty, staff, students and alumni.

In another, new interactive component, the Department of Mass Communication has planned a day-long broadcast on its online radio station, Eagle Air. Audiences will hear interviews with students, faculty, staff and alumni, including a special interview with Interim President George Hynd.

Two faculty members from the department, Joseph Kasko and Mark Nortz, will host the broadcast. Kasko and Nortz are the co-advisors to the Eagle Air station, and both have numerous years of experience working in radio and television.

“We’re really excited to help promote Winthrop and connect with students through our student radio station,” Kasko said. “We hope people will enjoy getting to know all of the wonderful students, alumni, faculty and staff who are part of the Winthrop community.”

Nortz said he hopes the broadcast will allow students and families to connect with Winthrop in a unique way given the current circumstances.

“Normally we would give personal tours of our facility, but we thought this virtual broadcast would be the next best thing,” he said.

Eagle Air is available via the free Internet radio app TuneIn and online.
