ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - Winthrop University awarded three scholars the President’s Award for Academic Excellence during Commencement ceremonies on Dec. 18 at Winthrop Coliseum. The award is given to the student(s) who have the highest GPA of their graduating class.

The following students were presented the President’s Award by Interim President George Hynd:

* Kayla Bumgarner, a business administration major from Rock Hill. She has been serving the Winthrop community since her freshman year. She is part of the leadership team for Baptist Collegiate Ministry, which she has been a member of since her second semester. Bumgarner has served as a Peer Mentor with the First Year Experience program for two years, interned and worked at the Winthrop Admissions office, and has worked with Signature Group Realty as a real estate social media intern. She will use her marketing concentration major and human resources minor after graduation in her new role as the marketing and enrollment coordinator for Riverwalk Academy.

* Mika Doyle, a human nutrition major from Charlotte, North Carolina. She is an active member of the Student Nutrition and Dietetic Association and has been a valuable part of the implementation of the free farmer’s market cart during the fall. She will begin graduate school in January at Winthrop in human nutrition. Doyle also is applying for a dietetic internship.

A third scholar who was unable to attend the ceremony was also recognized:

* Stephanie Bohland, an English major from Tampa, Florida. She is an accomplished and multidisciplinary scholar who has international experience studying, working and traveling in Japan, South Korea, China, France, Spain, Portugal, Finland, Norway, Germany, Poland and Nepal. An excellent scholar and outstanding explorer, Bohland has recently applied for a special Fulbright, the UK Partnership Award, to complete a master’s degree at the University of Sussex.
