Political Science Faculty Member Selected for Leaders Initiative

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — Winthrop University faculty member Katarina Moyon has been invited to join the Spring 2018 Midlands Diversity Leaders Initiative organized by the Riley Institute at Furman University.

The program is designed to break down barriers, build relationships and realize the advantages created by the diversity of the Midlands. Around 50 participants were chosen out of a pool of 550-650 nominees.

The group will meet once a month for five months in Columbia, South Carolina, to broaden participants' understanding of issues critical to the progress of South Carolina. Organizers said the program's goal is to cultivate statewide leadership on issues related to diversity, share knowledge, and to have an impact on the community through a local community-related project.

Moyon is director of the Human Experience course, co-director of the John C. West Forum on Politics and Policy, and a lecturer in the Department of Political Science. She joined the Winthrop faculty in 2004.

Moyon worked for the International Foundation for Election Systems, helping developing countries in Eastern Europe to organize and conduct democratic elections. She also spent three years working for the World Health Organization, European Division in Copenhagen, Denmark, analyzing impacts of health policies in eastern European countries.

She received her B.A. in international affairs and German from Northern Arizona University and an M.A. in international affairs from The George Washington University, Elliott School of International Affairs. While in graduate school, she conducted research on the Croatian electoral code through a year-long Fulbright Fellowship.
