Janet Wojcik Named a Distinguished Alumna By Alma Mater

  • Wojcik was recognized at Virginia Tech as the 2019 Distinguished Alumni in Academia for the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise.
  • The areas of consideration as a part of the nomination process are the following: contributions to field; leadership/service to Virginia Tech, college, department, CALS Alumni organization, community; and philanthropy to Virginia Tech.

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University Exercise Science Professor Janet Wojcik was recognized this fall by her alma mater as a distinguished alumna.

She was included in Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Alumni Organization’s Celebration of Ut Prosim awards program held virtually on Oct. 8.  The event was originally planned to be held on campus, in person, on March 20, but was reformatted due to COVID-19.

The areas of consideration as a part of the nomination process are the following: contributions to field; leadership/service to Virginia Tech, college, department, CALS Alumni organization, community; and philanthropy to Virginia Tech.

Promoted this year to professor at Winthrop, Wojcik is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and is an ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist and ACSM/American Cancer Society Certified Cancer Exercise Trainer. 

Her areas of expertise are: exercise physiology; physical activity for special and aging populations; policies, systems, and environments to improve physical activity and access to healthy foods; and active transportation.

She serves as grants chair for the Eat Smart Move More York County community coalition. From 2015-18, Wojcik was awarded the Bank of America Endowed Professorship from the Richard W. Riley College of Education to enhance her scholarship in her research interests. She serves on the editorial board for the Translational Journal of the American College of Sports Medicine.

In addition to earning a Ph.D. in human nutrition, foods, and exercise from Virginia Tech, Wojcik holds a M.S. in physical education from Canisius College and a B.S. in sport and exercise studies from State University of New York at Buffalo.
