Our application process simple, but it's best to be prepared before you begin. Make sure you have the following ready to go!
You'll be asked for the following:
IF you do not meet or exceed the typical application thresholds listed here, you should be prepared to describe how your life experiences make you a strong candidate for the Honors College at Winthrop.
We want to know about YOU, and your essay should help us achieve that goal. The essay component of your application should answer these questions: What obsesses you? What's your big idea? And what do you plan to do about it? No length requirement - focus on composing an essay that is genuinely you.
We recognize that generative AI tools are readily available and can be tempting to use during the application process. While we won't explicitly prohibit their use, we want to be transparent about why we strongly encourage you to write without AI assistance.
Our Philosophy: We're seeking to understand who you are as a thinker, writer, and person. Your authentic voice, which resonates with distinct rhythms, perspectives, and imperfections, tells us far more about your potential than a polished, AI-enhanced essay ever could. The most compelling stories emerge from genuine, unfiltered expression. Trust your own voice - it's more interesting than a computer.
Why We Discourage AI Use: The rough edges in your writing aren't flaws to be corrected; they're windows into your authentic self. The way you naturally express ideas, the questions you ask, and the connections you make are distinctive elements of your voice - and that's precisely what we're looking for. Even minimal AI assistance tends to smooth away these remarkable features, leaving us with prose that could have been written by anyone.
A Note on Perfection: Please don't feel compelled to leave in grammatical errors to "prove" you didn't use AI. We understand the difference between natural writing voice and intentional mistakes. What we're after is genuine expression, not performance of imperfection.
We've designed a fun and engaging activity to help us get to know you a little bit better - we think you'll enjoy it! The activity and art were developed by Winthrop Honors College students and staff! Once you submit your application, you'll receive a personalized link in your inbox! This will not take a lot of time - give yourself 20 minutes to be sure you're not rushed!
You'll be invited to apply for our Top-Flight Scholars Program once you're accepted into the Honors College. This requires you to be prepared with an additional reflective piece that addresses the following question:
What lasting impact do you aspire to make through your life's work and service? Describe the legacy you envision creating and how your current community involvement has shaped this vision. Explain how the Top-Flight program will help you achieve these lifetime ambitions.
The format of your response should be distinctively you. Are you a writer? Submit an essay. Are you an artist? Create an image or design that you created. Are you a musician? Submit an audio clip that conveys your message. Do you want to express your message through video? No problem, submit a video. The most important thing is that your submission should be your own work and clearly addresses the prompt.
