Sexual Assault Facts
- 1 in 4 college-aged women will be sexually assaulted.
- Rape is defined as "penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with
any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without
the consent of the victim."
- The majority of all sexual assaults (80%) are committed by someone known to the victim.
A relative, friend, or acquaintance.
- Despite what others might say, you DO have recourse and CAN get help after an assault. If you are assaulted, no matter the circumstances, it
is not your fault.
- 11.2% of all students experience rape or sexual assault through physical force, violence,
or incapacitation (among all graduate and undergraduate students)
- Among graduate and professional students, 8.8% of females and 2.2% of males experience
rape or sexual assault through physical force, violence, or incapacitation.
- Among undergraduate students, 23.1% of females and 5.4% of males experience rape or
sexual assault through physical force, violence, or incapacitation.
- 4.2% of students have experienced stalking since entering college.
- Sexual assault is NOT sex. It is an act of violence motivated by the rapist's need to dominate, control,
and humiliate.
- Sexual assault can happen to anyone regardless of their race, class, age, appearance,
or sexual orientation.
- Sexual trauma can be caused by rape, attempted rape, incest, unwanted sexual contact,
and sexual harassment

LGBTQ Statistics
Gay, lesbian, and bisexual people experience sexual violence at rates equal to or
greater than the general population. (GLBTQ Domestic Violence Project)
It is estimated that 1 out of 4 LGBTQ youth will experience abuse from a dating partner.
Dating abuse affects all youth, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity,
class, race, or other identity lines. However LGBQ/T youth may not know they are
experiencing abuse due to gender-based information and education on dating abuse.
A national study of youth in same-sex relationships found that 14.6% of males and
26% of females reported psychological abuse, and 24% of males and 28% of females reported
physical abuse from a dating partner.
21% of TGQN (transgender, genderqueer, nonconforming) college students have been sexually
assaulted, compared to 18% of non-TGQN females, and 4% of non-TGQN males. (RAINN)
