Social Studies Education

Mission Statement

The mission of the Social Studies Education Program is to equip students for careers as social studies teachers at the secondary level (9th grade — 12th grade). The interdisciplinary curriculum contains three essential elements which provide students with content knowledge which has both depth and breadth. At the heart of the curriculum is a core of history and social studies courses that allows students to explore American history, world history, economics, geography, sociology, psychology, and political science. In addition to these courses, students select a concentration that gives them the opportunity for more in depth study. Threaded throughout the program are education courses that provide students with practical classroom and field experiences to equip them to teach diverse populations of students.
