Please join Winthrop University Galleries for an artist talk by Sabine Gruffat, associate professor of Art at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She will be discussing her exhibition Antibodies, on display in the Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick Gallery.
Sabine Gruffat is a French-American artist who works with experimental video and animation, media-enhanced performance, participatory public art, and immersive installation. In this work, machines, interfaces, and systems constitute the language by which she codes the world. The creation of new ideas means inventing new tools, crossing analog and digital signals, or repurposing old machines to patch into new ones. By actively disrupting both current and outmoded technology, Gruffat questions standardized ways of understanding the world around us. She has produced digital media works for public spaces as well as interactive installations that have been shown at the Zolla Lieberman Gallery in Chicago, Art In General, Devotion Gallery, MOMA PS1 Contemporary Art Museum, Hudson Franklin in New York, and The North Carolina Museum of Art She is also a filmmaker with a special interest in the social and political implications of media and technology. Her experimental and essay films explore how technology and capitalism affect human beings and the environment. Sabine's films and videos have screened at festivals worldwide including the Image Forum Festival in Japan, The Ann Arbor Film Festival and Migrating Forms in New York. Her feature films have screened internationally including at the Viennale, MoMA Documentary Fortnight, Cinéma du Réel at the Centre Pompidou, and The Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival.
Currently Sabine Gruffat lives in North Carolina and is a Professor of Digital Art at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.

Please join Winthrop University Galleries for an artist talk by Reuben Bloom ‘11 and Matthew Steele. They will be discussing their exhibition Red Delta, on display in the Rutledge Gallery.
Reuben Bloom '11 is an artist and creative director based in Charlotte NC. Primarily exploring visual themes within the context of urban development and land use, Bloom uses the study of phenomena, found objects and photography to transform materials into ephemeral works of sculpture. Bloom earned a BFA from Winthrop University in 2011 and has exhibited work in Ross Galleries at CPCC and Goodyear Arts.
Matthew Steele is an artist and graphic designer living and working in Charlotte, NC. Often utilizing the aesthetic of function and industry, Steele draws parallels between the man-made and human technologies of the self. With a BFA in sculpture from Indiana University, Steele came to Charlotte in 2012 for a McColl Center for Art + Innovation Artist Residency. Steele has exhibited his work at Locust Projects (Miami), The Sculpture Center (Cleveland), Mint Museum of Art, Hodges Taylor, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, among others, and is a member of the Goodyear Arts Collective. He has work in collections nationally and internationally, including AXA, Art in Embassies, and Beacon Partners.
