ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — Three Winthrop University faculty members will be featured in the 2021 STEM for All Video Showcase funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The online event will be held May 11-18 via https://stemforall2021.videohall.com.

The theme for this year’s event is “COVID, Equity & Social Justice.”

The three faculty members are Kelly Costner, associate professor and coordinator of NExT LEVEL; Cassandra Bell, biology instructor and biology teacher education supervisor; and Beth Costner, associate dean and professor in the Richard W. Riley College of Education.

The presentation, “STEM Educator Recruitment Through Summer Experiences,” examines how the Winthrop Initiative for STEM Educators (WISE) has developed a three-week summer experience into a successful tool for recruiting future teachers of science and mathematics. The project was funded by the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program (NSF 15-530, Award #15406), which is administered by the NSF.

According to Beth Costner, one of the project leaders, Kelly Costner and Bell compiled the story of how the WISE interns have explored the theme of water in the summer experience. The video presents commentary from other Winthrop STEM faculty members and program participants who are now teaching in regional P-12 STEM classrooms. View the WISE video submission.

Now in its seventh year, the annual showcase features more than 250 innovative projects aimed at improving education in the science, math, engineering and computer science fields, which have been funded by the aforementioned NSF and other federal agencies. During the event, researchers, practitioners, policy makers and members of the public are invited to view the short videos, discuss them with the presenters online and vote for their favorites.

The STEM for All Video Showcase is hosted by TERC, in partnership with: STEMTLnet, CADRE, CAISE, CIRCL, STELAR, CS for All Teachers, NARST, NCTM, NSTA, NSF INCLUDES and QEM.
