Cyber Security Awareness Training

All Winthrop employees are required to take Cyber Security Awareness Training when they are initially hired and then again each October as long as they have an active account during Cyber Security Awareness Month. This training helps teach ways to keep accounts secure both at work and at home. A few topics include safe web browsing, how to choose a better password and how to identify social engineering scams.

There are baseline training modules that all account holders must complete. A number of additional training modules may be required depending on the area in which the employee works. If an employee works with financial data, that employee will have additional modules related to financial cyber security. An employee may be assigned modules covering cyber security related to FERPA (for student data), HIPAA (for health data), or other areas.

The training is hosted on the SANS Securing The Human training portal. You can either log on to Wingspan and click the link for the Cyber Security Training on the right in the Quick Links section. Or you can access it directly at this link:

    https://www.winthrop.edu/cybertraining

Use your e-mail address to log on. The login process utilizes MFA.

When you log on to the training portal, be sure to use your e-mail address and not just your username. For example, enter skywalkerl@winthrop.edu instead of just skywalkerl. That is the most common issue. If you are able to log on to Wingspan, then you should be able to log on to the training portal since they are tied together but just use a different format for the username.

Each year in October, employees have to take Cyber Security Awareness Training. However, employees also take annual training from the HR department or from Environmental Health and Safety. Depending on when you are due for those trainings, you may have done some training recently. Cyber Security Awareness training is not the same as what you were sent from HR. All trainings need to be completed.

The length of time for the training will vary from person to person. Some employees will have different training modules depending on their functional area.

You do NOT need to do all the modules in a single sitting or even a single day. You can complete one module and then log off. Later when you have a few more minutes, log on and complete another module. Just be sure to complete all the mandatory training modules within the timeframe you are given.

When you are newly hired, you have 7 days from the date of the training assignment to complete the training.
For the annual training, you will have a few weeks to complete the training.

If you are unable to complete the training, your Winthrop user account will be disabled. If that happens, you will not be able to access any Winthrop resources that require you to log on such as your computer, Banner, Blackboard, Zoom and other systems.

You can contact the service desk to request your account be reactivated in order to complete your training. You will then be given a 24 hour window to finish the training.
