Exercise Science studies the relationship between physical activity and the human body. The program’s broad curriculum focuses all types of physical activity including exercise, sport performance and rehabilitation. Our faculty-scholars deliver a program where the goal is for students to become productive stewards in our discipline and be competitive for graduate studies in allied health related professions or for entry into the workforce.

Athletic training is the art and science of the prevention, recognition, care, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses in physically active individuals. It involves the organization and administration of athletic training programs, as well as the education and counseling of a physically active population. Athletic training has been recognized by the American Medical Association as an allied health care profession and is practiced under the supervision of a physician. The certified athletic trainer is an essential member of the athletic health care team in a variety of settings including secondary schools, colleges and universities, professional sports teams, sports medicine clinics and industrial settings.
The degree requires 120 semester hours of coursework which includes a full-semester internship as the capstone experience and completion of a national certification credentialing examination. The required coursework includes biology and chemistry courses for science majors, two semesters of anatomy and physiology, food and nutrition, group exercise leadership, exercise testing and prescription, anatomy, exercise physiology, biomechanics, strength and conditioning, exercise and health promotion, psychology of sport and physical activity, and physical activity for special and aging populations.
The principal goal of the Exercise Science - Pre-Allied Health Program is to provide students with sound academic preparation to pursue a graduate program in an allied health area such as physical therapy or occupational therapy. Required coursework includes biology and chemistry, statistics, two semesters of anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics, exercise physiology, psychology of sport and physical activity, and physical activity for special and aging populations.
The degree requires 120 semester hours of coursework that includes a full-semester internship as the capstone experience and completion of a national certification credentialing examination. After 45 hours, all exercise science majors must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA in order to be eligible to take any 300 or above level courses from the Department of Physical Education, Sport and Human Performance. Students are also required to maintain a 2.5 GPA throughout the remainder of their academic career in order to remain an EXSC major.
The principal goal of the Exercise Science - Strength and Conditioning (EXSC-STRE) Program is to provide students with sound academic preparation in the science of strength and conditioning. Students will acquire knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the theoretical and practical components of strength and conditioning theory and practice. Required coursework includes biology and chemistry, two semesters of anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics, exercise physiology, adaptation responses to training, athlete assessment, psychology of sport and physical activity, and physical activity for special and aging populations.

Exercise Science students have access to a broad array of state-of-the-art exercise and athletic training equipment housed in both the Lois Rhame West Center and the Lowenstein Exercise Science Lab.
Each student can tailor a program to meet his or her career goals with available courses in event and fiscal management, health promotion and fitness, and the biological sciences.
Gain experience as a graduate associate on campus or with an internship at a local hospital, physical therapy clinic, commercial fitness center, or senior living complex.
Graduates are well-prepared for careers in community or school-based recreational programs; or as personal trainers, exercise specialists, or corporate fitness specialists in the fitness industry. The Exercise Science program provides a strong academic foundation for those who wish to go on to graduate school to become physical or occupational therapists, physician’s assistants, or to work in cardiac rehabilitation.
