With technology swiftly moving forward, these exchanges which utilize traditional printmaking processes, have become primarily for fine art purposes, ideal for groups who share common interests, for the furthering of conceptual research, and/or fundraising campaigns. This exhibition will display various portfolios from students, faculty and professional artists.

    Fin

    Coordinated by Winthrop University Galleries

A solo exhibition with works by Winthrop Art Education professor, Dr. Michelle Livek.

When working though physical or emotional pain, humans have developed uniquely personalized methods of safe escape. Actions or habits that are not associated with the pain, manifest as a boundary between being in the “spaces” that might re-traumatize, and the journey toward re-associating with the self — differently. Fin is an exhibition of works in a fixated style of analog (insert arrow with two directions) digital drawings and layerings that invite viewers to witness the multitude of hours, colors, patterns, habits, and momentum that it takes to find safety in fluidity.

"Bridging Worldly Desires and Transcendence: A Tale of Two Sisters in Toshio Hosokawa’s Opera Matsukaze"

Coordinated by Winthrop University Department of Music,

    DEI lecture series

Department of Music Professor, Dr. Tomoko Deguchi will present a lecture.

"Born in 1955, Toshio Hosokawa is one of the most successful and influential Japanese composers whose works are performed in Europe, United States, and Asia. His music references to Japanese classical aesthetic and philosophical ideals, especially the aesthetics of Noh Theatre. Opera "Matsukaze" is an adaptation of a popular 14th century Noh play by the same title. The story’s protagonists are the spirits of two sisters who linger in this world. This lecture will focus on the role of the chorus in the opera, acting as a passageway of the two sisters’ spirits, as their psyches shift from lingering in the earthly world to the state of hysteria, eventually attaining transcendence, disappearing to the other world."

Pop Culture, New Media, and the End Times in the Art of Paul Pfeiffer and Christian Jankowski

2023 Virtual Visiting Artist & Scholar: Dr. Isabelle Wallace

Coordinated by Winthrop University Department of Fine Arts

What does American Idol have to do with the book of Revelation? What do professional basketball players and new media have to do with the apocalypse? In this wide-ranging discussion of art since the year 2000, we will attempt to answer these questions through a consideration of several works by Paul Pfeiffer and Christian Jankowski. Those by Pfeiffer are typically erudite and sober, despite recurring references to the raced iconography of popular sports, while those by Jankowski are seemingly light-hearted and silly, despite religious and often cataclysmic subject matter. Two sides, perhaps, of the same coin, works by these artists will guide us as we grapple with the following essential questions: how does apocalyptic rhetoric function in art at the beginning of the second millennium? And, what connections might we make between it, technology, and pop culture?

Music and Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz
    Book by Roger O. Hirson

    Directed by Rachel Dawson

With an infectiously unforgettable score from Grammy and Oscar winning musical theatre giant, Stephen Schwartz, Pippin is the story of one young man's journey to be extraordinary. Winner of four 2013 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival.

Heir to the Frankish throne, the young prince Pippin is in search of the secret to true happiness and fulfillment. He seeks it in the glories of the battlefield, the temptations of the flesh and the intrigues of political power (after disposing of his father, King Charlemagne the Great).
