The Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Museum Professions at Winthrop University combines the study of art, history, culture, and visual storytelling with hands-on preparation for careers in museums, galleries, and cultural organizations.

Students explore art from around the world while developing the research, writing, communication, and critical thinking skills valued by employers and graduate programs. At the same time, they gain practical professional experience through museum-focused coursework, internships, curatorial projects, and opportunities to work directly with art and audiences.

Whether your goal is museum work, arts leadership, cultural heritage preservation, graduate school, or another career that values strong analytical and communication skills, Winthrop's Art History and Museum Professions major provides the foundation to succeed.

Why Choose Winthrop?

Turn Your Interests Into Professional Experience

From the first year onward, students begin connecting classroom learning to real-world practice. The major is intentionally designed to prepare students for careers in museums, galleries, and cultural organizations by combining art historical study with professional training and experiential learning.

Students learn not only how to interpret and research works of art, but also how museums and cultural institutions operate, serve communities, develop exhibitions, care for collections, and engage public audiences.

Gain Hands-On Experience in Museums and Galleries

One of the program's greatest strengths is the opportunity to gain professional experience while still an undergraduate.

Students may apply for paid student positions and internships with Winthrop University Galleries, working alongside gallery professionals on projects such as:

  • Object research and documentation
  • Exhibition planning and installation
  • Writing wall labels and exhibition materials
  • Educational programming and visitor engagement
  • Collections management and provenance research
  • Public outreach and community engagement

These experiences allow students to apply classroom learning in professional settings while building resumes, portfolios, and workplace skills valued by employers and graduate programs.

Learn in One of the Southeast's Most Dynamic Arts Regions

Located just outside Charlotte, North Carolina, Winthrop gives students access to a wide network of museums, galleries, historic sites, and cultural heritage institutions.

Students have pursued internships and professional opportunities with organizations throughout the Charlotte region and beyond, including art museums, cultural centers, historic sites, and community arts organizations, such as The Mint Museum, Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, and Culture & Heritage Museums of York County.

The region's vibrant cultural landscape provides opportunities to explore potential careers in museums, galleries, and cultural organizations while building professional connections before graduation.

Curate Real Exhibitions

Students interested in curatorial work have opportunities to move beyond theory and gain firsthand experience developing exhibitions.

Through specialized coursework and faculty mentorship, students can contribute to exhibitions in Winthrop University Galleries, curate virtual exhibitions, and pursue ambitious public-facing projects.

Qualified students may even apply to curate a large-scale exhibition at Goodyear Arts in Charlotte. Students selected for this competitive opportunity research, design, install, and promote their own exhibition while receiving guidance from faculty and arts professionals. Others have organized exhibitions and shown work at Blue Goose POP Gallery, which is a few blocks from campus. Experiences like these provide the kind of practical professional experience that many students do not encounter until graduate school or their first full-time job.
