You are a collaborator. You dream of standing in the spotlight or working behind the scenes to make the show happen. Learn about the latest techniques and hone your skills in courses like script analysis, stage make-up, directing, and stage management. Through class instruction, private coaching, mentoring, and performance, the Department of Theatre and Dance helps to develop students’ skills in order to succeed after graduation. The department advocates both theoretical and creative exploration to achieve an understanding of the social, political, historical, and technological aspects of theatre or dance. Winthrop theatre graduates are prepared to pursue careers with resident theatre companies, national touring groups, theme parks, local arts councils, and schools. Theatre alumni also pursue graduate degrees at prestigious institutions throughout the U.S.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The B.A. degree in theatre design/ tech aligns with the university's liberal arts-based vision of education that encourages breadth of knowledge.  Faculty shape class projects and mentor students in production work in a way that promotes collaboration — an essential skill for success in the performing arts and a very valuable skill in any profession.

Students majoring in theatre design/ tech at Winthrop University will experience a program that encourages individuality and includes focused coursework in acting and pursue advanced courses in theatre, including voice and dance, and they select a minor to complement their theatre studies. Very few undergraduate programs offer these many opportunities for students to perform, design, direct, choreograph, stage manage and run productions.

Each year, the department presents as many as six studio theatre/dance productions and other informal performances.
