For years Rutledge was known as Carnegie Library, named for industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie who provided funds for its construction. It was renovated into a classroom building when Dacus Library was constructed in 1969. That same year, the building was renamed in honor of Mai Rutledge Smith Johnson, wife of founding president David Bancroft Johnson and descendant of South Carolina's first governor, Edward Rutledge, who signed the Declaration of Independence. A 1990 renovation recaptured the splendor of the building's Classical Revival style, which incorporates features of French Imperial design. Today the Rutledge Gallery and the Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick Gallery are located in this building.

Featuring work from the late professor emeritus Alfred D. Ward and his previous students.
This exhibition honors Professor Emeritus Alfred D. Ward and his impact on our community through his work and the work of select Winthrop Fine Arts and Design Alumni who worked with Ward. Ward was Chair of the Department of Art and Design 1989-1996 and Professor of Art and Design through 2006. With the exception of a few years, he continued to teach at Winthrop through 2023.
In addition to works from various moments of Ward’s career as an international silversmith, artist, and designer, several works included in the exhibit are on loan by members of our community: the Winthrop University Mace, Letter Opener w/Winthrop seal gifted to a former BOT member, Necklace gifted to a Winthrop Donor, Winthrop Medal of Honor in the Arts awarded to a Supporter of Winthrop, and others.
The select Alumni included in this exhibition have written statements about Ward noting his influence on their lives and careers. Some made works of art specially for this occasion to honor and commemorate Ward.
