 La Ruchala A. Murphy, PhD, is a nonprofit leader with over 20 years of expertise in grants management, organizational leadership, and strategic program development within the nonprofit, arts, and business sectors. Currently serving as Development Director for SC Humanities, Dr. Murphy designs innovative fundraising strategies and cultivates meaningful partnerships to advance cultural enrichment and community engagement across South Carolina. Her prior roles include Arts Industry Director at SC Arts Commission, where she managed an $6 million annual grant portfolio, developed impactful capacity-building programs, and facilitated statewide arts initiatives.

Dr. Murphy’s career highlights also encompass executive leadership at Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation, directorial roles at United Way of the Midlands, and academic appointments as an Adjunct Instructor of Arts Administration at Converse University. She is a dual-degree graduate of Winthrop University, as an undergraduate and as a member of the inaugural class of the MA in Arts Administration program. With additional advanced degrees in Organizational Leadership and Nonprofit Administration, she is deeply committed to fostering education, public dialogue, and cultural sustainability.

Active in numerous professional associations, Dr. Murphy frequently presents on leadership succession, nonprofit capacity building, and community development at national and regional conferences. Her influential research and dedication to service underscore her commitment to creating lasting positive change through arts, humanities, and education.

La Ruchala is a member of the Southeastern Museums Conference, the South Carolina Federation of Museums, Association of Arts Administration Educators, the National Association of Nonprofit Organizations & Executives, and the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance.
