Winthrop students interested in participating in Model United Nations may register for PLSC 260, The United Nations. The class, offered only in the spring semester, concentrates on the organization and procedures of the United Nations. Currently taught by Dr. Chris Van Aller (pictured here), the class is extremely popular among all Winthrop students regardless of major. The students prepare for participation in Winthrop's Model United Nations Conference in March. The class has no prerequisites and satisfies the Oral Intensive Communication Requirement at Winthrop University. The conference serves as the culmination of the class, which ends earlier than most classes in the spring semester. AWARDS Dr. Van Aller, in coordination with the conference judges, bestows six Best Delegate Awards on the University students that participate in the conference and PLSC 260 class. These awards are based on the students participation, debate skills, character of their assumed nation and their helpfulness with their assigned high school students.
Model UN XXXII
The Winthrop Model UN is unique in that the program combines the participation of the college students and high school students. The college students act as chairs for the high school delegations. After participating in the UN class, several students remain active in Model UN by becoming Secretariat members, who plan and run the following years conference.
