Mathematics Department
Welcome to the
Department of Mathematics website!
The Department
of Mathematics has two main functions: to prepare the student body
at large for the quantitative challenges they will meet in their
studies and their lives, and to introduce mathematics majors to the
exacting methods of thought and analysis first developed by ancient
Greek philosophers over 2500 years ago.
Most
undergraduate students will intersect with the Department in CTQR
150 or MATH 101. The Department gives placement tests to incoming
students to determine which course is best for each student. The
Department of Mathematics operates a
Mathematics
Tutorial Center where students enrolled in all mathematics courses may
obtain individual assistance. In addition, some courses will use
tutoring software which is available for students in Sims 114.
Winthrop's
undergraduate programs in mathematics provide a background in
problem-solving and abstract reasoning. Students take a core of
common courses in calculus, algebra, analysis,
applied mathematics, and probability and statistics, and then
select additional courses in these areas.
Most courses for majors have fewer than 20 students, which allows
for individual attention to each student. A specific curriculum in
mathematics education prepares students for the
Praxis II examinations and careers in secondary
school teaching. Recent mathematics majors have enjoyed success in many
different areas, including secondary school teaching, graduate study
in mathematics or statistics, and employment with technology firms,
financial institutions and insurance companies.
The Department
embraces the use of technology: all students in calculus courses are
now required to take MAED 200: Introduction to Mathematica. This
course introduces students to Mathematica, which is a mathematical
software package of amazing power.
The faculty is
composed of experienced, highly qualified educators and professional
mathematicians who want to help you succeed in whatever mathematics
course you are taking. We look forward to seeing you in class and
during our office hours.
