Academic Scholarships

NOTE: Students must be ENROLLED FULL TIME (12 or more hours per semester) in order to receive
Winthrop scholarships.

Academic Scholarships for Continuing Students

Scholarship support is awarded to continuing Winthrop students on the basis of their academic
achievement at the University and/or  participation in extracurricular activities. High-achieving
students are invited to submit an application for scholarships to the Office of Financial Aid in
March
of each year. The Scholarship Committee will review the applications and make awards for the following academic year.  For additional information, you may contact

Academic Scholarships for Entering Freshmen

  • All students who apply for freshman admission by January 15th are
    automatically considered
    for merit scholarships ranging from $500 per year
    to full tuition, room and board.
  • Typically, students who score at least 1250 on the SAT or a 28 on the ACT (writing
    scores excluded) and earn a
    grade point average of 3.5 in academic courses,
    will be considered for scholarships.
  • As there are a limited number of awards available, not all students who meet
    the minimum criteria will be awarded a scholarship.
  • Out of state students who receive a Winthrop scholarship in the amount of $500 or more for an academic year will also receive a grant to cover the out of state
    fee portion of a students’ tuition charges.

Academic Scholarships

Students who earned a high school grade point average of 3.5 on academic courses and score at least 1250 on the SAT (28 on the ACT) will be considered.

Available for eight semesters of undergraduate study. Minimum cumulative GPA to retain academic scholarships varies from 3.0 to 3.2

SC Governor's School of Science & Math Scholarship
$4,000 per year

Admitted graduates of the Governor's School with a minimum SAT of 1250 (ACT of 28) qualify for this award.

Available for eight semesters of undergraduate study with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0

Admissions application.

International Baccalaureate Scholarship
$5,000 per year

The International Baccalaureate Scholarship is awarded to freshman applicants who complete the IB Program through the senior year of high school and who score at least 1250 on the SAT or 28 on the ACT. The scholarship is valued at $5,000 and is available for eight semesters of undergraduate study with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
