The Undergraduate Major in English

Teacher Education

Students and faculty share a laugh at the research conference The Bachelor of Arts in English requires students to complete at least 36 hours of English courses. In addition to the core English curriculum of 15 semester hours, students choose one of three concentrations: Teacher Education, Literature and Language, or Writing. The department is also home to an innovative Bachelor of Science degree in Science Communication. Winthrop also offers 18-semester-hour minors in English and writing, as well as many opportunities for creative writers.

The strengths of the English major at Winthrop University lie in its students, its faculty, and its curriculum. The major attracts students who are skilled, diligent, and interested in truth and the search for truth. Because the major in English develops writing, speaking, reading, and analytical skills, students are prepared to succeed in a wide variety of professions.  Students benefit from a curriculum that is comprehensive and richly diverse, including special topics courses designed and offered by the faculty each year. Students in other departments may wish to minor in English, Writing, or African American Studies as well.

English department faculty members combine a high level of knowledge of their specialty areas with a commitment to excellent teaching. Winthrop students have the opportunity to study with a diverse faculty within the Department. Among the awards won by faculty in the Department are Winthrop's Kinard Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Phi Kappa Phi Excellence in Teaching Award. Several members of the Department hold the title of Distinguished Professor.
