Sources and Analogues II Home Page
The purpose of the project is to produce a
revised and updated edition (S&A2) of Bryan and Dempster's Sources and
Analogues of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (S&A1). This new edition will
include texts of all the known sources of the Canterbury Tales (CT) and,
where the direct sources are unknown, the closest known analogues in the forms in which
Chaucer may have known them. In addition to the texts retained from S&A1, the
new edition will bring together for the first time in one place all sources and analogues
discovered during the past 50 years. It will also include introductory essays to each
chapter that will represent at the time of publication the best current information about
these source texts. All 27 chapters in S&A1 will be revised and updated, and
chapters on the General Prologue and the Retraction added. We expect that the two-volume
set will be published by Boydell and Brewer.
