Radford Defeats Eagles 72-64

ROCK HILL, SC–Raymond Arrington scored 25 points to lead three Radford players in double figures as the Highlanders defeated Winthrop 72-64 Saturday night in a Big South Conference showdown.

The victory moves Radford (12-14) into second place in the conference with a 7-4 record while Winthrop (12-11) falls into third place with a 6-4 slate.

Radford took a 30-17 halftime lead behind the inside play of 6-10 Nosa Obasuyi and then rode the outside shooting of Arrington in the second half to hold off a Winthrop rally that saw the Eagles close to within four points at 41-37 with 12:01 left in the game. Arrington ended the drought by scoring seven points in the next two minutes to put Radford ahead by 11 at 50-39 with 9:04 remaining. The Eagles closed to within four again with 43 seconds left in the game when Pierre Wooten layup made it 66-62, but Radford connected on six of six free throws in the final 35 seconds to hold off the defending Big South champs.

Wooten led Winthrop with 18 points and a career-high eight steals. Greg Lewis scored 16 and Marcus Stewart added 13 for the Eagles.

Radford finished the night shooting 46 percent (23-50) and was 7 for 13 from three-point land. The Eagles shot 34 percent (24-70) for the game after a 25 percent performance in the first half.

Correy Watkins had 13 rebounds for Radford to tie Stewart for game-high honors.
