Tuesday, March 11
ROCK HILL, SC–Winthrop University senior forward Greg Lewis was honored today as a 2002 Associated Press All-American honorable mention after leading the Eagles to their fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA championship tournament.
Lewis (6-6, 222, Akron, OH) is averaging 15.4 points and 10.2 rebounds heading into Thursday night’s South Region first round game against the Duke Blue Devils. Winthrop (19-11) was the first team in NCAA history to capture four consecutive league tournament championships on March 2 when it defeated High Point 70-48.
Since then, Gonzaga, Arizona and Duke have also earned four straight tourney crowns. Lewis scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the championship game to earn his 18th double-double of the season to rank fourth among NCAA Div. I players.
The AP award follows his selection two weeks ago as the Big South Conference Player of the Year and MVP of the Big South tournament. He was also the 2000 Big South Conference tournament MVP and was selected Chevrolet Player of the Game in Winthrop’s first-round loss to Oklahoma in the West Regional when he scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Lewis received a medical redshirt year last season after suffering a foot injury. During his two-years playing for head coach Gregg Marshall, Lewis has scored 936 points and pulled down 531 rebounds.
He becomes the first Winthrop basketball player to earn a post-season All-American award in the school’s 15-year history as a NCAA Div. I member.
