Theatre About the Company New Stage Ensemble Theatre is a professional, non-Equity theatre company in residence at Winthrop University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts, in Rock Hill, S.C. The company is dedicated to creating a theatre of excellence that will illuminate the human condition and nurture both the artists who create it and the audiences that share it. New Stage Ensemble provides opportunities for area professionals, faculty artists, and current and former Winthrop students to collaborate on creative projects. Our aim is to enrich the cultural life of the university community and throughout the Carolinas by creating unique and exciting theatrical events that provide a deeper appreciation and understanding of ourselves and the world in which we live. History of the CompanyThe New Stage Ensemble was founded at Winthrop University in September 1993 by theatre professor Jeannie M. Woods and actor Dan Woods, in collaboration with Winthrop’s School (now College) of Visual and Performing Arts. The premiere production of New Stage was Vincent, a drama about the artist Van Gogh. Since that debut, New Stage has produced several summer theatre seasons in the studio theatre and on the main stage of Johnson Hall on the Winthrop campus. Two New Stage productions were chosen for the Piccolo Spoleto Theatre Festival where they had highly acclaimed, sold-out runs. New Stage has also toured productions to arts venues in the Carolinas.
