Get Engaged

Community organizations and schools are key components of service-learning. The authentic settings and meaningful service provided for the students enrich their learning in the classroom and encourage future civic activities.  Well-planned and supervised service-learning projects are one of the best ways to recruit future donors, board members, and volunteers!

Apply now to get your organization and its projects known to faculty and students who have the desire and the skills to get them completed for you.  As you consider suitable work for service-learning students, please think "outside the box" and remember the different skill levels students bring.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Prepare marketing plans and public relations materials

  • Design web pages and database programs

  • Lead community outreach activities and education

  • Coordinate drives and fund development

  • Interior design/renovation

  • Assist with accounting

  • Environmental and research projects

  • Fine Art workshops, benefits, classes

These ideas are just a starting point - the limit is your imagination!
Keep the following points in mind as you develop service-learning projects:

  • The work must be challenging and meet a community need

  • Structure is important (who will orient and supervise students, what product do you expect, how is project connected to your mission)

  • Academic credit is for learning, not service

  • Accessibility of your staff to the students ensures a higher quality experience

Once your organization's information is entered, you can begin entering projects.  Be creative and descriptive.  There is no limit to the number that you can enter except the organization's ability to provide supervision.  If you have any questions, contact Ellin McDonough.  Enjoy!
