ACAD 101

You and your agency are invited to participate in Winthrop’s ACAD 101 course: Principles of the Learning Academy.  The goal of this first year seminar course is to provide students with the concepts, skills, and resources necessary for successful higher learning and to facilitate the student’s adjustment to and engagement in the class and university.  Topics covered in ACAD 101 include understanding higher education, campus resources, academic skills, personal management, community integration and diversity awareness.

As a part of the ACAD course students work as a team, participating in a volunteer service project in the Rock Hill and surrounding areas.  The authentic settings and meaningful service provided for the students enrich their learning in the classroom and encourage future civic activities.  In the Fall of 2006 we anticipate 58 classes of ACAD, each with 15 to 20 students.  That is a lot of community service!  Examples of projects include participation in an educational or community outreach program, developing public service announcements and marketing materials, environmental projects, design/renovation of space, leading teen discussion groups, and participation in community service with children.

To serve our community better, we are giving non profit agencies the opportunity to request service projects be completed by ACAD students.   These group projects will be selected before August, and can be completed anytime during the Fall semester (August through November).  I have attached a form, “Service Learning Project Request”.   There is no limit to the number of projects you can request.  Projects not chosen will be forwarded to our Community Service program for consideration by other Winthrop organizations.

I look forward to working with each of you, putting faculty and students in touch with you and your projects.  If you have any questions about participating in ACAD or other programs at Winthrop University, please feel free to give me a call.  I can be reached at 803-323-2141.
