Our Program
The Department of Speech at Winthrop University offers a
pre-professional Bachelor of Arts in General Communication Disorders. Our program prepares
students for the graduate level study required in the speech profession. Classes focus on
the identification, diagnostic process, and therapeutic intervention of communication
disorders including articulation, language, hearing, voice, and fluency.
The Bachelor of Arts in General Communication Disorders
includes 36 semester hours in the required program, including classes in phonetics,
articulation and language, audiology, stuttering, and language acquisition. In addition,
students must complete 52 semester hours of general education requirements and 18-24
semester hours of a minor.
Graduate School
Speech Pathology majors can expect to complete at least a
master's degree to work as a professional. Over 90 percent of Winthrop speech graduates go
on to graduate education for professional preparation in speech pathology. The acceptance
rate in approximately 95 percent, with most students choosing graduate schools in the
Southeast.
Job Opportunities
Speech Pathology is one of the major growth fields for the
next decade. The South Carolina Board of Education has noted that Speech-Language
Pathology is a critical shortage subject field in the public schools.
Winthrops
program is designed to prepare students for graduate work leading to state and national
certification and licensure as a speech clinician. Graduate school is not a requirement
for employment in all jobs, but it is an asset on your resume. Co-operative Education
(Co-op) opportunities are available at a variety of locations throughout the Rock/Hill
York County area. Co-op opportunities are optional, but students may apply three semester
hours of co-op credit to the major. Networking opportunities also exist through
membership in the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA).
Faculty
The Speech Department's faculty hold
degrees in speech pathology and/or audiology and national certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing
Association. They participate in professional activities including research and
publication, as well as volunteer in the Rock Hill community. These professionals have a
high level of knowledge of their specialty areas and a commitment to effective teaching.
