Department Mission

The nine sociology and anthropology full-time faculty members hold the Ph.D. degree or are in the final stages of completing the degree. The faculty includes recipients of Winthrop's "Outstanding Junior Professor" Award, the "Kinard Award" for outstanding contributions to teaching, the award as finalist for the state of South Carolina's Professor of the Year, and awards for work with students. Professors have presided over the Southern Demographic Association and the Southwestern Sociological Association.

Faculty members have published in nationally recognized scholarly journals such as the American Sociological Review, Demography, Journal of Gerontology, Teaching Sociology, and Signs. A recent study has found that the department is among the top two percent of undergraduate sociology programs in the country, in terms of article publishing in important journals. The faculty are active in--among other professional organizations--the American Sociological Association, the Southern Sociological Society, the Southern Demographic Association, and the American Anthropological Association.
