Master of Social Work

General Information

The Department of Social Work offers three options for pursuing a Master of Social Work Degree:  the Two Year Program (60 credits); the Three Year Weekend MSW Program (60 credits); and, the One Year Advanced Standing Program (39 credits).

Review of applications will begin on February 1, and will continue on a rolling basis until enrollment for each cohort is filled

What does candidacy mean?

Candidacy status means that an MSW curriculum has been reviewed and accepted as meeting CSWE requirements for social work education. In addition, candidacy status recognizes that a program is on track in proceeding toward full accreditation. Winthrop University  has been granted “candidacy” status through the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).  We accepted our first class of students in the fall of 2006.  Full accreditation is expected in 2009 and will be retroactive for all graduates.

Program Mission

The mission of the MSW program is as follows:  Using an ecological framework, the MSW curriculum at Winthrop University is aimed at producing graduates who are capable of enhancing the well-being of persons across the life span by strengthening the resilience of individuals, groups and communities to expand their coping skills and empowering them to improve their quality of life and to maximize their opportunities for growth and development.  In addition, the Department is committed to making ongoing contributions to the development of the greater community through practice, relevant research, scholarship, and community service.

Program Concentration

All MSW Programs at Winthrop (the three-year Weekend Program, the two-year Full-Time Program, and the one-year Advanced Standing Program) offer a concentration of study in Individual and Community Empowerment practice. Individual and community empowerment practice is defined as follows:

Using an ecological/empowerment construct, the MSW curriculum at Winthrop University produces graduates who are capable of enhancing the health and well-being of persons across the life span, in various population groups’ by strengthening the resilience of individuals, families, groups, and communities to expand their coping skills and empower them to improve their quality of life and to maximize their opportunities for growth and development. In addition, the Department is committed to making ongoing contributions to the development of the greater community through practice-relevant research, scholarship, and community service.

Field of Practice Tracks

In order to further focus their study in Community and Individual Empowerment, students will select one of the following Field of Practice tracks: Families and Children; Older Adults; or Health/Mental Health.  Study in the selected Field of Practice track is emphasized when students take advanced practice courses and when they engage advanced field instruction.
