Community and
Individual Empowerment Concentration
All MSW Programs at Winthrop (the three-year
Weekend Program, the two-year Program, and the one-year
Advanced Standing Program) offer a concentration of study in
Individual and Community Empowerment. Individual and community
empowerment practice is defined as follows:
Using an
ecological/empowerment construct, the MSW curriculum at Winthrop
University produces graduates who are capable of enhancing the
health and well-being of persons across the life span, in various
population groups’ by strengthening the resilience of individuals,
families, groups, and communities to expand their coping skills and
empower them to improve their quality of life and to maximize their
opportunities for growth and development. In addition, the
Department is committed to making ongoing contributions to the
development of the greater community through practice-relevant
research, scholarship, and community service.
Field
of Practice Tracks
In order to further focus their study
in Community and Individual Empowerment, students will
select one of the following Field of Practice tracks:
Families and Children; Older Adults; or Health/Mental Health.
Study in the selected Field of Practice track is emphasized
when students take advanced practice courses and when they
engage advanced field instruction.
Field
Instruction
Students in the MSW Program are required to
complete field internships during both years in the Program. Field
I requires a generalist social work focus, and Field II and Field
III require a focus in the student’s Field of Practice track.
