Three
Year Weekend MSW Program
The Weekend MSW Program is a 60 credit
hour three-year program designed for students who are
employed in a human services setting. The Program offers a
concentration in Individual and Community Empowerment
practice with a focus in one of three student-selected Field
of Practice Tracks: Families and Children; Older Adults; or
Health/Mental Health.
Community and Individual Empowerment Concentration
All MSW Programs at Winthrop
(the three-year Weekend Program, the two-year Full-Time
Program, and the one-year Advanced Standing Program) offer a
concentration of study in Individual and Community
Empowerment. Individual and community empowerment practice
is defined as follows:
Using an
ecological/empowerment construct, the MSW curriculum at
Winthrop University produces graduates who are capable of
enhancing the health and well-being of persons across the
life span, in various population groups’ by strengthening
the resilience of individuals, families, groups, and
communities to expand their coping skills and empower them
to improve their quality of life and to maximize their
opportunities for growth and development. In addition, the
Department is committed to making ongoing contributions to
the development of the greater community through
practice-relevant research, scholarship, and community
service.
Field
of Practice Tracks
In order to further focus their study
in Community and Individual Empowerment, students will
select one of the following Field of Practice tracks:
Families and Children; Older Adults; or Health/Mental Health.
Study in the selected Field of Practice track is emphasized
when students take advanced practice courses and when they
engage advanced field instruction.
Employment Requirement
Students participating in the Weekend
MSW Program are required to be employed in a human services
setting. We recommend that students gain the cooperation
and support of their employing agency for pursuing MSW study
through the Weekend Program. Applicants to the Program must
complete the Evidence of Experience Form (included
with the application packet) to verify their employment
status.
Field
Instruction
Students in the Weekend MSW Program
are required to complete twelve hours per week in field
internship beginning in their second semester of study and
continuing throughout the remainder of their three-year
program. Field I requires a generalist social work focus,
and Field II and Field III require a focus in the student’s
Field of Practice track. Placements in a student’s
employing agency may be considered when the following
criteria are met: a) field internship responsibilities must
be different from the student’s regular job role; and, b)
the internship supervisor (MSW degree required) must be
someone other than the student’s regular work supervisor.
Class
Meeting Format
Classes are scheduled one weekend per
month (including one Friday per course) throughout the
calendar year. Each course will consist of five intensive
meeting days (Friday/Saturday/Sunday one month and
Saturday/Sunday the next month). Class meeting days are
preceded and followed by required readings and assignments.
Students are expected to attend all five meeting days per
course.
Courses consist of five distinct
components:
1. A initial study period that includes readings and
a written assignment.
2. A three-day weekend of classes (Friday, Saturday,
and Sunday, 8:30a.m.—5:00p.m.)
3. Another study period, during which additional
readings and written assignments are completed.
4. A two-day weekend of classes (Saturday and
Sunday, 8:30 a.m.—5:00 p.m.).
5. A final study period during which
the final course assignment is completed and materials for
the next course are received
Class
Attendance Policy
Because each course in the Weekend MSW
Program consists of five intensive class meeting days,
students are expected to attend all classes. Students who
are absent for more than one day of class in a course will
not receive credit for the course. Absences must be
requested through the course instructor. Because courses
are sequenced, the need to re-take a course can delay a
student’s progression through the Program.
