ANSWERS

2. How do I apply for Housing?

Housing Preference Form/Residence Hall Contract with instructions will be sent to you from the Department of Residence Life if you are accepted to Winthrop University. Return the completed Housing Preference Form and Residence Hall Contract to the Department of Residence Life as soon as possible.  If you apply by  May 1st, you will receive a room reservation by the 4th week of July.

3. How can I request a roommate?

If you would like to request a roommate, be certain that you and your prospective roommate have completed the Roommate Request section on your Housing Preference Form

If you have already returned your Housing Preference Form and now want to make a roommate request, both you and your prospective roommate need to send a statement to the Residence Life office including your name,   Winthrop ID number (or Social Security Number), and the requested roommate’s name and Winthrop ID number (or Social Security Number).  Any roommate request must be mutual in order to be considered.  We will try to accommodate roommate requests as long as space is available.

4. When can I change my room?

The room change period begins on the Friday after the first day of classes at 2:00 p.m.

5. Will my room have a computer connection?

YES!! All residence hall rooms have 2 direct connections to the Winthrop computer network You will be able to use your computer via Ethernet from your residence hall room to access the campus-wide network. The network enables you to connect to the Internet and World Wide Web.  The best part is that it is FREE!

7. Is Voice Mail Free?

YES!!  Don't bring an answering machine.  You will not need it.  Each resident is issued a voice mail account.  Winthrop University strongly suggests that you set up your free voice mail account.  The University uses your room phone number to contact you for important issues.

8. Can I have visitors?

Sure you can have visitors, but they are requested to follow the Visitation/Guest policy of the residence hall in which you live. Three Visitation/Guest options are available with designated residence halls and hours ranging from restricted to self regulated. All guests must be accompanied by their host at all times. Hosts are responsible for the behavior of their guests.

9. What about safety and security?

Residence hall perimeter doors are locked 24 hours a day and, most of the hall offices are staffed 24 hours a day. Students are free to come and go from their residence hall when they choose. Winthrop University also has police officers commissioned by the state of South Carolina who patrol the campus 24 hours a day.

For more information about the Winthrop Campus Police, click here.

11. What about my roommate?

One of the most anticipated events college students face is meeting their roommate. You can choose someone you already know or let us assign you a new person to get to know. Both ways can work. Sometimes roommates can become best friends, but not always. The nice part about it is you don't have to be best friends to be good roommates.

If you have a friend with whom you'd like to share a room, write their name and Winthrop ID number (or Social Security Number in the space provided (they'll need to do the same with yours).

Both of you can help us out by mailing your Housing Preference Forms together or at the same time. We'll do our best to meet your request, but we can make no guarantees. There may not be a vacant room in the building you requested.

You'll receive more information about sharing your room with a roommate when you receive your housing assignment.

12. Are Freshmen required to live on campus?

Winthrop's residence hall experience is dedicated to the development of each resident student and is an essential part of the university's total educational experience.  Therefore, all first-year and second-year Winthrop students live on campus.

13. Do all Freshman live in the same residence hall?

Winthrop does not have any all freshman halls. The majority of new students are assigned to Margaret Nance, Wofford and Richardson. These residence halls provide the best opportunity for new students to meet and interact with each other, which makes the transition to college easier. We make every effort to assign freshman together in rooms as long as we have empty rooms available. When empty rooms are unavailable, freshman are assigned with returning students. The earlier you return your completed housing application, increases your chances of being assigned with another freshman.

Answers

1. What should I bring with me to School?

You will need to furnish your own linens, pillow, and telephone (Even though most students bring a cell phone, the University strongly recommends that you have a landline phone and that you set up your free voice mail.  In the event of an emergency, the landline phones are tied to a 911 system.  In addition, the University uses the voice mail system to leave you important messages.).  The beds require extra-long twin sheets.  Information will be inserted into your housing assignment notification packet on how you can order extra long sheets.  You may want to bring a container to carry accessories to and from the bathroom if you will be living in a hall with community bathrooms.  Closet and dresser space is limited so it is suggested you bring only the clothes you need for a season. Other suggested items are: an iron, a study lamp, an alarm clock, hangers, an umbrella, etc.  Those in Thomson, Lee Wicker, Phelps, and The Courtyard at Winthrop will need bathroom cleaning supplies. Keep in mind that there are several retail department stores in Rock Hill in which these supplies can be purchased.

2. What should I leave home?

You should leave candles, George Forman type grills (or other open plate heating devices) , Pets (other than fish), and halogen lights at home because they are prohibited on campusThe University provides a MicroFridge® so students may not bring a refrigerator or microwave.

3. How can I request a roommate if I
already turned in my housing application?

In order to be assigned with a requested roommate, both students' requests must be mutual.  Both you and your requested roommate each need to send us a letter stating that you would like to be roommates.  Both letters need to include your Winthrop ID number (or Social Security Number) and your prospective roommate's Winthrop ID number (or Social Security Number).  Make sure you both sign the letters.  Although we strive to accommodate all requests, we cannot guarantee that your roommate request will be honored.

4. I would like to work on campus. How do I obtain information on employment opportunities within Residence Life?

Feel free to visit our "Forms" page to review all available applications for job opportunities with Residence Life.

5. When should I request campus housing?

About 2-3 weeks after you are notified of admission to Winthrop University, you will receive a housing packet from the Department of Residence Life.  Complete, sign, and return your Residence Hall Contract and Housing Preference Form as early as possible to the Department of Residence Life.  We may not be able to assure you a room if your documents are received after May 1, 2006

6. Can I cancel my Residence Hall Contract?

The Residence Hall Contract is a binding document for a full academic year (Fall and Spring semesters).  Details for cancellation and cancellation fees can be found on the contract in Article II.  You may download the Residence Hall Contract by going to www.winthrop.edu/reslife/forms.html.  Click on the appropriate contract.

7. When can I move into my room?

Residence Halls open for Fall 2007 on Friday, August 17 beginning at 7:00 A.M for new freshmen only.

8. What do I need to do if I bring a car to campus?

To bring a car on campus, students must purchase a parking permit. Permits can be purchased online through Wingspan, or directly through Campus Police.

9. What is your policy on putting nails in the walls for pictures, etc?

Regardless of how you hang posters, you need to return your room to its original condition prior to your move-in.  Residence Life will charge students at the end of the school year for nails or nail holes in walls.  We also charge for tape or putty marks.  There are adhesive products on the market that theoretically do not mark the walls, but the university does not guarantee their claim

10. When are we informed of our roommate and do we get to contact them before hand?

Room assignments and roommate information will be sent in the mail during the 4th week of July.  We strongly encourage you to contact your roommate.  We will furnish your roommate's name, home address and phone number

11. How do you match roommates if I do not request one?

Roommates are matched according to information filled out on the back side of the application for housing under "Life Style Indicators."
