Dietetic Internship Mission Statement

The mission of the Winthrop University Dietetic Internship is to prepare competent dietitians for entry into the profession by providing applied professional experiences and satisfying requirements for eligibility to take the national examination required to become a registered dietitian.

The Department is guided by the American Dietetic Association's Code of Ethics, Standards of Education and Standards of Professional Practice. The Winthrop University dietetic internship is accredited by the Commission on Accredited Dietetics Education and meets or exceeds the needs for entry-level practitioners in the state, region and nation. The Dietetic Internship at Winthrop University fills a void in the educational process necessary for meeting dietetic registration eligibility requirements. Since South Carolina is a rural state with a large number of community-based hospitals, the program focuses on a diverse, general curriculum to meet the needs of both large and small facilities.  The dietetic internship  Winthrop University provides students with the requisite skills and experiential background necessary to function as entry-level dietitians.

Measurable Goals for the Dietetic Internship Program are to:

  1. provide practice experiences in nutrition therapy, community nutrition, food systems management    and business entrepreneurship which meet eligibility and membership requirements for registration with the American Dietetic Association,
  2. prepare competent entry-level practitioners through application of dietetics theory to practice in health care settings,

  3. promote ethical practice by students,
  4. encourage students to be self-directed in their approach to professional development,
  5. prepare practitioners capable of utilizing research in dietetics practice,
  6. encourage students to develop skills in the communication of food and nutrition knowledge, and
  7. develop entry-level knowledge and skills related to resource management in practice environments

“The program gave me the hands-on experience that I needed to feel confident in my clinical skills and the ability to begin my career in dietetics.”

“If you are able to work independently and get along with others in new environments this experience is for you.”

“It was a well-developed program that provided me experiences best matched my specific interests…and then some!”

"It is an intense 6 months, but well worth the stress"

"It’s a wonderful opportunity for someone who is independent and confident in entering and working in many different environments…"

"It’s a wonderful program. It challenged me to keep learning and motivated me to push myself more. The one thing that sets this program apart from others is the faculty support. I knew the advisors cared about success professionally but also personally.  The support from the faculty gave me encouragement when I needed it most."

"Be prepared to work hard because the internship is very intense."

"It is a very organized program.  Starting out was overwhelming, but there are so many people to guide you and answer your questions."

"The best aspect of my experience was the opportunity to do real dietetics work, independently, and hands-on – not just book work or observational type work."
