New Start is a
service program that assists adult students with the admission
process and provides an ongoing source of support and information. A
simple call or visit to the New Start Office gets you started; staff
members explain admission procedures and answer any questions you
have about Winthrop.
To apply for
admission to Winthrop as a New Start student, you must be 25 years
of age or older
by the first day
of classes for the term for which you are applying.
You must
also be seeking a degree by
enrolling in college for the first time, continuing undergraduate
work begun some years ago or seeking a second undergraduate degree.
Freshman
applicants will be evaluated for admission based upon performance in
high school. You must have earned a high school diploma or passed
the high school equivalency exam (GED). Freshman applicants who
graduated after 1988 must also satisfy
the state’s high school
prerequisite requirement.
Transfer
applicants will be evaluated based upon their cumulative performance
in college. Official transcripts from each regionally accredited
institution must be submitted to Winthrop University whether
transfer credit was earned or is desired.
Once admitted,
you will be assigned an academic advisor who will assist you in
planning your class schedule and determining what courses you need
to work towards your degree. If you are uncertain as to your degree
choice, you may enter Winthrop as an open major and make your degree
choice later.
New Start
provides assistance to full- and part-time
students.
