Eagles Heading to NCAA Tournament for Eighth Time in Ten Years

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Winthrop Eagles upset top-seeded UNC Asheville 66-48 on March 8 to win the Big South Conference Championship and received an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

The men’s basketball team will find out who and where they play in the first round of the NCAA tournament on March 16 during Selection Sunday. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. at the Winthrop Coliseum in time to watch the CBS Selection Show at 6 p.m.

For the fourth straight year, and eighth time in 10 seasons, the Eagles are Big South Conference champions. With the win Winthrop (22-11) earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, while UNC Asheville (23-9) will await its matchup for the NIT.

Eagles senior Michael Jenkins scored 33 points during the championship game and was named the tournament MVP.
