Welcome from the Chair
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Winthrop University Department of Music website. Please take time to explore the various pages throughout the site that present information on faculty, academic programs, ensembles, scholarships and performances, Our faculty, staff and students stand ready to assist you as you plan for your college music study. As you evaluate your options in choosing a school, please remember that it is an extremely exciting time to be a music major at Winthrop.

The Department is housed in the Conservatory of Music – an effective environment for study, practice, and performance. The Department of Music offers professional degree programs in a liberal arts setting. Our music programs are accredited nationally by the National Association of Schools of Music (since 1940), the National Council on Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Winthrop University has identified the arts as one of its areas of excellence.

Through a challenging curriculum and an excellent faculty, Winthrop offers four undergraduate and three graduate music degree programs, as well as extensive opportunities for performance in one of our many and varied ensembles. Additionally, we sponsor over 100 performances annually, most of which are free of charge and open to the general public.  If you would like information about auditions and music scholarships, please check the links to the left of this page.

All entering music majors must perform an entrance audition to be accepted into a music degree program.  An audition for a music scholarship will also serve as the entrance audition.  Auditions are scheduled at various times throughout each semester and at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.  New students also take the Music Theory Placement Exam which is scheduled during each freshman orientation session in June and at the beginning of each semester.

I would encourage you to schedule a visit to Winthrop and the Department of Music to visit classes and speak with our students and faculty. If you would like more information on being a part of our exciting music program, please contact my office in one of the following ways:
