Who is Aldo González ?

Representing the Union of Organizations of the Sierra Juarez, Oaxaca (UNOSJO), Mexico, Aldo González visited Florida, Georgia, South Carolina (includes Winthrop University in Rock Hill), and Louisiana as part of the Stop the Free Trade Area of the Americas Tour.

Mr. González is a key social organizer of the Sierra Juarez in Oaxaca.  His organization provides technical assistance to farmers with the goal of promoting sustainable rural economies that are based on respect for indigenous culture.

Small farmers in the Mexican state of Oaxaca have been devastated by the economic reforms brought on by NAFTA.  Already almost half of small farmers in Oaxaca have immigrated north seeking survival because they can no longer make a living on their ancestral lands.
