Undergraduate
Bachelor of Arts in Modern
Languages
The
Department of Modern and Classical Languages offers a BA in
Modern Languages with two specializations, Spanish and French.
Students
majoring in foreign language have gone on to graduate school
in advanced language study or international business, have
entered the teaching profession, or have obtained positions in
translation services and bilingual capacities in business and
industry and in travel agencies.

Licensure
as Secondary School Teacher
(French
or Spanish Emphasis)
Students
desiring Licensure as teachers of French or Spanish should
consult with the department's teacher licensure adviser and
the College of Education section of the catalog for specific
requirements for admission to the Teacher Education
Program.

Graduate
Master
of Arts in Spanish
The
Master of Arts consists of 30 semester hours with a thesis
option. There are
five required core courses: Hispanic Civilization, Advanced
Phonetics, Advanced Conversation, Advanced Grammar and
Composition, and Masterpieces of
(Spanish or Spanish American) Literature. The other 15 semester hours can be taken in additional
Spanish courses or in electives approved by the Graduate
Director. The
thesis option grants 6 semester hours, which are in lieu of
two courses.
Graduates
have gone on to teach at the secondary school level or
community college level or to
pursue the doctorate as preparation for a career in university
teaching. The completion of the graduate degree has also allowed some to pursue
other foreign language careers such as translation and
social services in which their improved language skills have been
beneficial.
