Chair's Report for the African Union
Model UN XXXI
I

African Union Symbol

The African Union is a pan-African organization consisting of fifty-three member states that was established in 2002 after succeeding its predecessor the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). The goal was to create a so-called “United States of Africa” that is loosely based on the structure of the European Union.  Its mission is to “promote unity, promote peace among African nations, encourage democracy, encourage good governance, and to foster sustainable growth.”

The African Union is an organization that works to facilitate collective action toward common objectives through the use of diplomacy.  So, what exactly does the AU do?  The African Union’s missions are quite varied ranging from defending sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence of its member states to working with international associates to stop the spread of preventable diseases.  The AU also provides support to governments, to participate in negotiations, to fulfill their duties under agreements, and to formulate and enact legislation.  As you can see, the African Union plays an important role in securing the best interests of its member states.

For those delegates whose countries will be a part of the Model United Nations African Union, it is recommended that you research prevalent issues that face both your country and region today and what if anything, is being done to overcome those troubles.  Has the African Union assisted your nation-state before or is currently working with your country?  This committee is aimed to come up with ways to end African tribulations faced by the continent’s collective nations and the world at large through extension.  While you may be unable to solve all of the crises faced by Africa, you can at least take steps in the right direction.  In preparing for this committee, consult the African Union’s website to find additional information regarding the organization itself and pertinent topics.  The website is: www.africa-union.org.
