Organizations
Department sponsored organizations that help students make contact with
professionals professional
practices:
The Association for Women in
Communications
is a national organization open to women
and men interested in the advancement of women in their
communication careers, protection of the First Amendment
freedoms, and the guarantee of freedom of information. The Winthrop chapter
sponsors speakers, offers opportunities to network with
professionals in the workplace and plans special workshops.
Radio Television News
Directors Association of the Carolinas
established the first South
Carolina campus chapter at Winthrop, offering
membership to all students interested in radio and television
news. Students meet and talk with industry leaders in
the Carolinas who hire students after
graduation.
This organization formerly was the Radio Television News
Directors of the Carolinas.
Society of Professional
Journalists is a national organization open to all
students interested in a career in journalism, SPJ is
interested in high professional standards and First Amendment
issues. Through workshops, speakers and conventions, it gives
students opportunities to meet reporters, editors and
professional writers. SPJ also sponsors a high school essay
contest on freedom of expression.
Academic
Honor Society
Kappa Tau Alpha
is a
national honor society open to the top 10 percent of the
juniors and seniors majoring in mass communication. Selection
is based solely on academic achievement. Members are initiated at the
annual Recognition Dinner. KTA is a member of and recognized
by the national Association of College Honor Societies.
