Student Internships for Academic Credit
Many employers report
that at least one internship is mandatory before a candidate
will be considered for an entry-level position. The Department of Mass Communication
is dedicated to seeing that students receive
professional experiences as interns.
Students may complete
internships for 1-3 hours of academic credit (MCOM 461, 462,
463). A grade of
S or U is recorded for all internship courses.
The department prefers
that the internship be a full-time work experience for the
student for 10 or more weeks. When part-time, students must complete at least 150 hours of
work.
Reimbursement by the
employer to the student for special expenses connected with
the internship is appropriate.
Students registered
for MCOM 461, 462 or 463 will be covered by Winthrop’s
Worker’s Compensation.
Internship reports are
kept on file in the department.
All students are encouraged to look through them to
search for prospective internship employers and to get a feel
for what they can expect from an internship.
Tips for landing
an internship:
-
Start early. Begin
looking several months ahead of time so you have enough time
to find the internship that is right for you.
-
Consult your advisers. They know your skills and can provide valuable contact
information to get you started.
-
Talk to your fellow classmates. Students
who have already completed internships can
give you advice about obtaining the internship that is right
for you.
-
Don’t give up. It
may take a while, but eventually the right internship will
come along. Be persistent in your search and don’t just take the first
thing that comes along.
